Pinterest Pins

Vertical image and video Pins that get found in search: a 2:3 design, keyword-rich text and a link worth clicking.

Pinterest works like a visual search engine. People come to plan and discover, so Pins keep bringing visits for months when they match what people search for.

Five rules apply to every format: hook first, stay consistent, tell a complete story, end with a call to action and design for the phone. Read the five rules

Hook

  • Use a vertical 2:3 image. It takes the most space in the grid without being cut off.
  • Add a text overlay. A short headline tells searchers what they’ll get.
  • Show the result. The finished recipe, room or outfit inspires clicks.

Design and edit

  • Design at 1000 × 1500. Use the Pinterest Pin preset.
  • Brand it subtly. A small logo at the bottom keeps your Pin yours when it’s saved.
  • Make fresh Pins. New images for the same link do better than re-pinning the same one.
  • Video Pins: hook early. Use 9:16 with on-screen text, since many people watch without sound.

Caption and copy

  • Write a keyword-rich title. Use the words people would type into Pinterest search.
  • Describe the Pin in natural sentences. Put the main keyword near the start of the description.
  • Add a link that matches the Pin. The page should deliver what the image promises.

Timing and cadence

  • Post seasonal content early. People plan ahead on Pinterest; publish weeks before the season.
  • Pin consistently. A steady flow of fresh Pins beats a big batch once a month.

What to measure

Impressions show how often your Pin was seen; saves show it was worth keeping; clicks show it drove visits to your site.
